If you want to find innovative, passionate street performances in New York City, look no further than the Bronx. Since 1993, Dancing in the Streets has been choreographing incredible performances in the city; the non-profit organization first made a home in colorful, diverse Brooklyn, and recently relocated to the equally culturally rich Bronx neighborhood in 2011. Located in the Hunt Point area, Dancing in the Streets exists as a “Company in Residence” at the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education, where both organizations share the same dedication to fostering artists and promoting the diverse cultural legacy of the Bronx.

According to its mission statement, Dancing in the Streetsis applying its 28-year legacy as a producer of innovative public performances to reclaim, revitalize, and promote natural, architectural, and cultural treasures of the Bronx…” Dancing in the Streets seeks to do this by continuing to perform free public routines of dance and other works in hopes of bridging generational and cultural gaps. The organization is also dedicated to working on educational programs to deepen community bonds and nurture emerging artists.

In the past, Dancing in the Streets has performed in a variety of public spaces such as grain silos, airplane hangers, beaches, parks, rooftops, fire escapes, and of course, in the street. The organization’s love of producing adventurous, free of charge, public performances in New York City and the surrounding areas is a testament to the spirit of their endeavors. Dancing seeks to challenge its artists, and delight audiences with unexpected elements of performance and dance.

Choreographing dance performances to generate artistic entertainment for audiences is only part of what Dancing in the Streets hopes to achieve. The organization is also dedicated to showcasing the strength and uniqueness of the Bronx and its residents, including its many emerging local artists.
