Art enthusiasts in New York City already know that there are hundreds of museums, galleries, and performance halls where one can delight in spectacular cultural offerings. Did you know that there are other ways to enjoy the arts throughout the five boroughs? Have you ever considered volunteering your time or skills to an arts organization?

NYC-ARTS The Complete Guide says, “Volunteering for arts and culture groups in New York is a great way to contribute to their success, serve communities and expand your own skill set and experience within the tremendous arts scene of New York City.” Whether you’re an established or emerging artist, teacher, administrator, craftsman, or just passionate about the arts, many organizations welcome volunteers to assist them.

NYC-ARTS The Complete Guide offers detailed information on where and how to volunteer with arts organizations across the city. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • Volunteer at CITYarts. This organization brings people together through the creation of public art that beautifies and improves the quality of life in neighborhoods all around NYC. CITYarts welcomes volunteers annually to help with the organization’s multiple public arts projects. If you’re a creative type, you’ll enjoy helping to create mosaics, murals, and sculptures for various communities.

  • Volunteer at the Museum of Art and Design. If you enjoy spending time in museums, and are well versed in contemporary art and design, a volunteer opportunity at MAD might be just for you. This groundbreaking museum often seeks volunteers to assist visitors in understanding and interacting with current exhibitions.
  • Volunteer at Symphony Space. This performance space offers a range of affordable (often free) programming that includes music, dance, literature, film, and productions for children. Symphony Space is an eclectic cultural hub that is always looking for volunteers to help out with photography, videography, administrative duties, and much more.

By volunteering your time to arts organizations that inspire you, you’ll be able to experience art and culture in a whole new way!
